SPACE International Conference 2023 on Arhitectural Culture and Society: Exploring Social and Economic Inequalities and Their Effects on Culture and Architecture

2023-07-25

We are pleased to announce the Theme of the SPACE International Conference 2023 on Architectural Culture and Society Conference as ‘Exploring Social and Economic Inequalities and Their Effects on Culture and Architecture’. This interdisciplinary Conference aims to investigate the critical relationship between social and increasing economic inequalities, culture, and architecture. It provides a platform for scholars, researchers, practitioners, and enthusiasts to explore how these inequalities impact architectural practices, cultural expressions, and societal experiences.

In today’s world, social and economic inequalities are on the rise, posing significant challenges to cultural production, urban development, and architectural design. This Conference seeks to examine the complex interplay between social and increasing economic inequalities, culture, and architecture, focusing on understanding how these disparities shape the built environment and impact the lived experiences of communities. We invite contributions that critically engage with the consequences and responses to these evolving dynamics.

We invite submissions of original research papers, case studies, and theoretical reflections that align with the conference theme and address the following tracks (but not limited to):

1- Architecture and Marginalised Communities:

  • Analysis of the ways in which social and economic inequalities affect marginalised communities in terms of access to quality architecture, public spaces, and infrastructure
  • Examination of how architectural interventions can empower and address the needs of marginalised groups
  • Exploration of inclusive design principles and practices that can help mitigate the effects of inequality on the built environment

2- Spatial Justice and Equitable Development:

  • Investigation of how social and economic inequalities manifest spatially and the resulting impact on urban development
  • Analysis of policy frameworks, planning strategies, and urban governance models aimed at promoting spatial justice and equitable development
  • Exploration of alternative models for affordable housing, public amenities, and community-based initiatives that address increasing economic disparities

3- Cultural Production in an Unequal Society:

  • Examination of the relationship between social and economic inequalities and cultural production in architecture
  • Analysis of how architecture and the built environment contribute to the formation and representation of cultural identities in unequal contexts
  • Exploration of artistic and cultural practices that challenge inequalities and promote social cohesion through architectural intervention

4- Ethics, Responsibility, and Architecture:

  • Investigation of the ethical dimensions of architecture in the face of social and economic inequalities
  • Analysis of the responsibility of architects, urban planners, and policymakers in addressing these inequalities through their professional practice
  • Exploration of the potential of participatory design processes and collaborative approaches to create more equitable and socially just built environments

Apart from the sessions on the Theme, the Conference will continue to accept research and studies in the General Topics listed on the Conference page and detailed information about the Conference.
